Mary Williams Hyde Blog

So disappointing to lose my first blog statement.  This reminds me of how I learned to save often after I lost half a term paper my first semester in college. I was new to computers when I returned to school in the late 80’s and what a lesson that was!

Theres a saying, “There are no accidents,” that I like. I’m trying to figure out though how it’s a good thing to have to start all over…I didn’t make a controversial statement that I shouldn’t have had “out there” anyway….so “angels” what gives?

In general I made a statement about how I worked triple time  this last year to acquire new skills to serve my graphic and web design clients better. All to keep my head above water during these rough financial times and to help my clients do the same. And also in general it has been an amazing feeling to be able to learn so many new things at my “old” age of nearly 64. It gives me much needed confidence during a very scary time for me and our economy.

I understand that at big ad agencies all the work is divied up among several levels of people.  I’ll tell you for sure I wish I had that kind of help. If I can’t do it it isn’t going to get done (except now Doug Halverson is going to help with some projects…yeah!). So here is a list of the work I can do (and have done): Graphic design-brochures, logos, book design, complex newsletters, billboards, logos, product labels, product packaging, web design, interpretive boards, museum displays. I also often have to do complex research and copy writing and editing plus take the photos. Web design-complex shopping cart set-ups, CSS menus, slideshows, tickers, contemporary designs, blogs and, now home page themes for Twitter and WordPress blogs. I can also administer hosting and domains for clients including domain transfers and set-up for blogs. Marketing: I help my clients make decisions about where and when to advertise and development custom advertising campaigns .

I also specialize is national and international tourism marketing. I have extensive experience and have generated very successful promotional campaigns for many clients. I also have event management experience, especially the fund raising part of organizing them.  Speaking of fund raising, I have been intricately involved in raising a couple million dollars for community projects that I believed in.

I am an excellent ad salesman….1000’s of ad sales so far.

I have also published my own monthly newspaper, the Mirror Magazine, for three years and a series of community wellness newsletters that were very well received.

I am a half year into social networking. I love Twitter as there is so much that makes me better professionally . Facebook is growing on me too, though at first I didn’t “get” why much of what is said is small talk. Now I’m trying to learn blogging as I think that will complete my social networking experience very nicely.

I am located in Klamath Falls, Oregon.  I have clients all over the west…even one in Ohio and I specialize in equine and livestock industry related businesses but have handled most every kind of business you can imagine. My special gift (thanks to my 15 years experience working for a newspaper) is the ability to do fully developed same day ads for clients needing them right away for national magazines. I think that’s why I have  so many clients…there is a real need for fast turn around service!

All that being said, I’m also worried about getting older. I have a lot of talent and skills…but I also have heavy competition for every job from younger, more attractive designers.  I never rest then in my quest to keep up with modern technology especially my main program, Photoshop, and the warp speed changes happening to the internet. I would like to work well into my 70s if I can.

Makes me tired to think about all this. It’s an hour and a half past my bed time. Good night….and sorry if you stopped by earlier in response to my Tweet and found nothing.
